DeJong powers Antioch
Paul DeJong homered and knocked in 3 runs as Antioch's baseball team got the best of its district rival Thursday, beating Lakes 12-8 in a Class 3A regional semifinal at Grayslake Central.
Antioch (18-16) will play Grayslake Central for the regional title at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Chris Terzic earned the win over Eagles ace D.J. Snelten, pitching 6 innings. Kris Nordby threw a scoreless seventh.
DeJong, Kevin Smiley (double, 3 RBI) and Brett Prather (double, RBI) each had 2 hits for the Sequoits.
Vernon Hills 3, Elmwood Park 0: At Elmwood Park, Zach Kisley scored the only run that the Cougars needed in the first inning on an infield error.
Scott Kempel (9-4) helped his own cause two innings later when he drilled a triple over the right fielder's head and scored on a overthrow on the relay. Chris Marras, Eric Oberwise and Kempel each contributed with 3 hits. Kempel threw a complete game, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 11.
The Cougars were strong defensively up the middle, as Chris Argianas and Anthony Mazza had solid games. Marras gunned out the only runner that attempted to steal.
Vernon Hills will next play St. Viator in the Class 3A regional at 10 a.m. Saturday.
