Top seed Westminster Christian rolled to a 10-0 victory in six innings against No. 5 South Beloit in a Class 1A regional baseball semifinal in Elgin Wednesday.
The Warriors scored at least 1 run in each inning, including a 4-run third, rapped 10 hits and played errorless in the field to advance to Saturday's regional title game against the winner of today's semifinal between No. 2 North Shore Country Day and No. 3 Alden-Hebron.
Sophomore Ryan Perez (8-0) held the Sobos to 2 hits in 4 innings and struck out 8, and sophomore Kevin Elder struck out 4 in 2 hitless innings. Frank Oliver, Joe McGannon, Andrew Mason and Ben Stevenson each had 2 hits for Westminster Christian (24-9).
Elgin 4, Lake Park 3: The Maroons snapped a 15-game losing streak by scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to win in the Upstate Eight. Sophomore Alex Doty (3-5) threw a complete-game 7-hitter in which he struck out 7 Lancers. Andrew Higdon had 2 hits for Elgin (5-25, 4-20).
Streamwood 16, St. Charles East 9: Richie Gorski (4-for-5, 2B, 3B), Dylan Noncek (5-for-6, 2 runs) and Pat Manning (2-for-2, 3 walks) led an 18-hit attack by the Sabres, who played errorless in the field to improve to 20-13 overall, 14-10 in the Upstate Eight. Junior Blake Hunter ran his record to 8-1 after allowing 9 earned runs on 11 hits in a complete-game effort.
Waubonsie Valley 9, Larkin 8: The Royals led 8-2 before the Warriors stormed back with 4 runs in the sixth and 3 runs in the seventh to win an Upstate Eight game in Aurora. Senior Jake McCleary (4-5) took the loss in relief. Scott Harm (2-for-4) hit a home run and Lee Jackson went 2-for-4 for the Royals (9-22, 8-15).
Neuqua Valley 12, Bartlett 0: Starting pitcher Mike Tomsovic (3-4) got not help from his defense, which committed 9 errors in an Upstate Eight game. Bartlett slipped to 11-19, 7-16.
Hampshire 5, Marengo 1: Jared Wienke hit a 3-run home run in the ninth inning to highlight a 4-run outburst by the Whip-Purs in Big Northern East action. Starting pitcher Luke Wians held the Indians to 1 unearned run on 5 hits in 7 innings. Ryan DeChant (1-2) pitched 2 scoreless innings and struck out 4 to pick up the victory. Ryan Burke went 3-for-5 and Ron Laramie was 2-for-4 with a double for Hampshire (15-15, 6-3).
College baseballSpring Arbor 5, Judson 2: A 3-run fifth inning sealed the game for Spring Arbor University as it took a 5-2 win over Judson University in the first game of the NCCAA World Series in Mason, Ohio. Judson had the game tied at 2-2 when Spring Arbor put 3 runs on the board in the fifth. Mitch Smith took the loss for Judson and is now 6-5 on the year. Judson was led by Johnny Amann's 2 hits. Brian Brauer and Derek Shomon each had RBI as Shomon hit a home run. Judson will now face King's College today in an elimination game.
