Concert to pay tribute to slain ex-Naperville student Chelsea King
French horns will be front and center tonight as the Hill Middle School Honor Band celebrates the life of former student Chelsea King.
King, 17, was killed in late February while jogging near her family's home in San Diego County. A 30-year-old registered sex offender has been charged with her murder.
Growing up in Naperville, King was an avid band member and racked up several awards during her middle school years, including the 2006 Director's Award for Band and the annual Naperville Municipal Band scholarship.
Her family moved to California in January 2007, during her freshman year at Waubonsie Valley High School.
The concert, at 7:30 p.m., will include several selections honoring Chelsea, including a French horn piece she performed at her last Hill concert in 2006 when she received the director's award.
"She was a wonderful musician and we thought it would be the right thing to do, an appropriate way to honor such a wonderful girl," said Hill band instructor Megan LoPresto. "She was a really great kid and we like remembering her in a positive way."
The concert is free and open to the public.
