Ex-Island Lake trustee's husband faces assault charges

The husband of a former Island Lake trustee is facing misdemeanor charges following a confrontation with relatives at his home, police said Wednesday.

Terry Fleissner, 47, was arrested after he threatened four relatives with a rifle Sunday during an argument, police said. Police later removed 29 firearms, 280 rounds of ammunition, four knives and two swords from the house, but no weapons charges were filed, Police Chief William McCorkle said.

Fleissner has a valid firearm owners identification card, McCorkle said.

Fleissner, of the 100 block of Southern Terrace, was charged with aggravated assault, reckless conduct and three counts of child endangerment.

Fleissner's wife is former village trustee Sally Fleissner, who unsuccessfully ran for mayor in 2009.

The confrontation came during an argument about gun safety and the government, McCorkle said.

Fleissner brandished a bolt-action rifle and ordered the relatives - including three children - out of the house, McCorkle said.

He never pointed the rifle at the relatives, McCorkle said. Rather, he cycled rounds in and out of the gun's chamber, McCorkle said.

As a result, the state's attorney's office approved the misdemeanor charges, McCorkle said.

After leaving the house, the victims drove to the police station and filed a report, authorities said.

Terry Fleissner was arrested afterward, and the weapons were seized, McCorkle said.

No one was hurt.

Fleissner was released from Lake County jail on Monday after posting 10 percent of a $25,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court April 26.

Fleissner's attorney, Philip Baron, declined to comment on the arrest.
