Hanover Park blaze consumes 2 cars

A fire engulfing two cars in a Hanover Park driveway spread to the house Wednesday night.

Firefighters were called to the 8000 block of Northway Lane about 6:34 p.m. for a report of a vehicle fire, according to Battalion Chief Jeannine Ames. When they arrived, there were two vehicles on fire in the driveway and the fire had spread to the attic of the single family home.

Three residents, a dog and a cat were home at the time but all escaped safely.

The blaze took about a half-hour to extinguish and firefighters were on scene for just under two hours. Bartlett, Streamwood and Roselle fire departments assisted.

A damage estimate was not available Wednesday night, but Ames said the fire extended into the garage, living room and kitchen area through the attic and there was heavy smoke through the house, rendering it uninhabitable.

Both cars were totaled. Red Cross was on the scene to assist the family.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
