Olympic silver medalist will get her 18 scoops

Olympic speed skater Katherine Reutter floated it out there as a dare after winning a silver medal in the Winter Games:

"I've said for a long time that I'll be walking into the closing ceremony with an 18-scoop ice cream cone," Reutter told reporters in Vancouver. "If anyone in the world can make an 18-scoop ice cream cone, call me. I'll eat it."

That's all Katie Dolan Dix needed to hear.

The owner of Capannari Ice Cream in Mount Prospect told Reutter she could make her that 18-scoop cone.

"She said she wanted to eat 18 scoops because she was so tired of the intense regimen and diet she'd been on for the Olympics," Dix said. "I think she was just saying it, but we can make it."

Reutter will swing by the ice cream shop at 2 p.m. on Sunday to enjoy one of the most filling snacks she'll ever eat. Dix has until then to figure out a way to stack 18 scoops of ice cream on a cone without it toppling over.

"I think we're going to freeze the scoops and use a rod in the center," she said. "But that's what we're feverishly trying to figure out this week."

The 18-scoop cone will feature Reutter's favorite ice cream flavors - strawberry, coconut and fudge swirls.

Capannari customers will be able to try Reutter's flavors for the next couple of weeks.

Katherine Reutter, 21, grew up in Champaign. She's a three time U.S. Champion and two time Olympic medalist and the first U.S. woman since 1994 to win an individual medal in short-track.

Reutter is also known for her appearance on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" in December 2009 when host Stephen Colbert autographed her thigh.
