Roselle garbage pickup changes are real this time
After a marketing snafu had many Roselle residents believing their waste hauler had changed in February, a few real differences with garbage collection will begin this spring.
Roselle's waste hauler will remain Republic Services, formerly Allied Waste, after village officials renewed a five-year contract.
But residents will see rate increases starting Thursday, with monthly charges for homeowners rising 60 cents more than last year. The total cost will be $14.34 per month from April 1 through March 31, 2011.
Rates will increase in the subsequent years of the contract, with $1 more in monthly charges starting April 1 of each year from 2011 through 2014.
In addition, eligible seniors will continue to receive a 50 percent discount on residential rates and yard waste stickers will remain $2.25 this year.
Garbage pickup and recycling day will also change for residents living on the west side of the village beginning this month. Republic will pick up residential refuse in areas west of Roselle Road and south of the railroad tracks on Tuesdays, starting April 6.
Residential pickup east of Roselle Road, and the area west of Roselle Road but north of the railroad tracks will still occur on Wednesdays.
Later this spring, Republic will distribute recycling carts to residents, which are similar to the current garbage carts. Village officials said the larger-capacity carts allow for more efficient recycling, both for residents and for waste haulers, and will keep recyclables better contained because they have lids.
Residents will not pay extra for the new carts, which will come in three sizes.
