Red Wings spoil Hawks' chance to clinch division title
The Blackhawks will have to wait until Sunday to clinch their first division title in 17 years.
The Hawks needed Detroit to lose in regulation on Saturday to wrap up the Central Division, but the Red Wings lost 4-3 to Nashville in overtime at Joe Louis Arena.
It looked as if the Hawks were on their way to clinching the Central, but trailing 3-2 with under a minute to play the Red Wings got a goal from Pavel Datsyuk with 36.4 seconds on the clock.
Nashville's Ryan Suter scored 16 seconds into overtime for the win.
Only the Red Wings can still catch the Hawks, who have 103 points with five games remaining.
Detroit has 96 points with four games to play and still can finish with 104.
The Hawks eliminated Nashville from the division chase with Friday's 2-1 win at New Jersey. The Predators have 98 points but only two games left on their schedule.
The Hawks host Calgary on Sunday afternoon at the United Center in a key game for both teams.
The Flames beat Colorado on Friday night to move into a tie for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with 89 points.
The Hawks haven't won a division title since 1992-93, when they captured the Old Norris Division with106 points.
Detroit has won the last eight Central Division crowns.
