No one hurt when Campton Hills home goes up in flames
A fire in an upscale Campton Hills neighborhood devastated one home Wednesday night, but the lone resident in the home when the fire broke out was able to escape without injury.
Fire crews from seven departments were called to the blaze on Canterbury Court in the Hastings subdivision about 5 p.m.
The fire is believed to have started in the rear of the two-story home, according to police and fire reports.
St. Charles Assistant Joe Schelstreet said the initial call at 4:42 p.m. was for a deck on fire. When crews arrived, the rear of the house was fully involved, Schelstreet said. An investigation continues and a cause has not been determined.
The fire caused about $600,000 in structural damage and another $200,000 for damaged contents, Schelstreet said. The house, which records show was owned by Timothy and Vicki Foley, was deemed uninhabitable.
A number of pets, including sugar gliders and rabbits, were rescued from the basement. The family cat, however, perished.
Neighbor Linda Kopec, who lives across the street from the Foley's house, said the community is rallying around the family to lend support.
"Vicki walked out of the house without shoes on," Kopec said. "Their daughter's prom is this weekend and her dress was in the house. Everyone is going through their closets trying to find something for her to wear to make it the enjoyable evening she had envisioned."
Crews from St. Charles, Batavia, Burlington, Elburn & Countryside, Hampshire, South Elgin and West Chicago battled the fire.
