Hanover Park canine retires

Rumble, the Hanover Park Police Department's canine, retired Friday after an 11-year career with the force. Under the supervision of his handler, Officer Mark Atkinson, Rumble, now 12, conducted numerous vehicle, building and narcotic searches and assisted in searches for missing persons.

He was the highlight at annual Cops Day picnics and helped other police agencies when requested. Rumble and Atkinson were also assigned to the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System's Mobile Field Force Unit, which responds to large disturbances or events requiring crowd control.

The department has yet to decide whether to get another dog.
