Lakes handles young Carmel

Three sophomores plus three freshmen equal one young team.

And Carmel's youth showed on Monday in a 10-1 loss to Lakes.

"We'll look good for a couple of innings and then we'll make a bunch of young mistakes," Carmel coach Jason Raymond said. "That's what happened tonight. Plus, Lakes really hit the ball well. They did a nice job of putting the ball in play."

Lakes finished up with 11 hits and put the game away with a 6-run fifth inning. Shannon Cooley and Sara Braden each had doubles for the Eagles.

"We just had a tough inning in the fifth," Raymond said. "We had a walk, an error. We had a run that scored on a pass ball. But it's just going to take some time for us to iron out some things and to develop confidence in those situations. The nice thing is, the silver lining is, that we have very coachable players who will learn soon what it takes to compete on varsity."

Vernon Hills 10, Hersey 1: Megan Meline went a perfect 4-for-4 to lead Vernon Hills to the victory. Teammate Lauren Yacullo chipped with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Both Meline and Yacullo had doubles.

Winning pitcher Jennifer Claussen had 5 strikeouts in 7 innings.

Crystal Lake South 5, Grayslake North 3: Despite 2 hits from Kristina Gandy, a home run from Mindy Runge and a double from Kelsey Borders, Grayslake North took the loss.

McHenry 10, Grayslake Central 1: McHenry rolled up 12 hits while Grayslake Central rolled up 6 errors.
