Two boys shot in Schaumburg continue to recover
Two Hoffman Estates boys injured in a Schaumburg shooting March 10 continued to make strong progress in their recovery a week later.
The 12-year-old victim has been upgraded to fair condition at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, while the 16-year-old victim has been discharged.
A 14-year-old girl who was also grazed in last week's shooting outside a strip mall on the 900 block of Bode Road was released shortly after the incident. She is the sister of the 12-year-old victim and girlfriend of the 16-year-old.
Schaumburg police weren't releasing any new details Wednesday on their investigation, or on the search for the shooter's vehicle, described as a gold extended-cab pickup truck.
The three kids were crossing Bode Road from their Hoffman Estates apartment complex to a 7-Eleven in Schaumburg when they were struck by bullets from the passing truck as soon as they set foot in the convenience store's parking lot.
The trio sought refuge in the 7-Eleven where employees quickly took them to the back of the store while a customer called 911.
Although a motive for the shooting remains unknown, investigators are looking into a possible connection to an altercation the three victims and a larger group from the apartment complex had with a boy who didn't live there about half an hour before the shooting.
Police Chief Brian Howerton said investigators have been in contact with that boy.
