Shoe Factory Road Woods renamed to honor Hansen
The Cook County Board of Forest Preserve Commissioners voted unanimously today to rename a portion of the Poplar Creek Forest Preserve near Hoffman Estates in honor of the late Carl R. Hansen of Mount Prospect, who served on the board for more than 32 years.
The measure, sponsored by Bartlett Republican Commissioner Timothy Schneider, renames Shoe Factory Road Woods on Route 59 south of Shoe Factory Road to Carl R. Hansen Woods. Schneider replaced Hansen in 2006 on the forest preserve board and the Cook County Board, which have the same membership.
Hansen, who died a month ago, led the battle to keep a segment of the woods from being turned into a landfill during his tenure as a Republican commissioner from 1974 until 2006, Schneider said.
