Blues Fest raising money for Winfield schools
This weekend's inaugural Winfield Blues Fest is giving parents the opportunity to enjoy a Saturday night out while doing their part to help a local school district.
Two bands - Rob Russo & The Loose Screws and Deja Blues - will perform during the 21-and-older show, which runs 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at American Legion Post 76, 570 S. Gary Ave., Carol Stream. The evening will include a silent auction, raffles, a "Spin the Wheel" game, snacks and a cash bar.
Sales of the $10 admission tickets will raise money for the Winfield PTO, a group that helps support the educational experience for the nearly 400 prekindergarten through eighth-grade students in Winfield School District 34. Last year, the group bought computer enhancing equipment, including LCD opaque projectors and document cameras, for the district's schools.
While the Winfield PTO previously has hosted family events, organizers said Saturday's fundraiser was inspired by the fact both bands include parents of District 34 students.
"A lot of other schools have adults-only events, like trivia nights and dinner dances," said Patti Weber, chairwoman of the committee that organized the show. "Traditionally, Winfield schools haven't done that. So let's take advantage of these two bands and have an adults-only event this year."
Weber said the goal is to raise money for the Winfield PTO while giving parents a fun night out. The hope is that at least 150 people attend. The American Legion hall has room for up to 200 people.
Rob Russo & The Loose Screws and Deja Blues both have agreed to perform at the show for free. "We just have to buy them drinks," Weber said.
For everyone else, there will be the cash bar and pizza slices will be sold. Free snacks donated by District 34 teachers will be available.
Meanwhile, items available as part of the silent auction include rounds of golf at Klein Creek Golf Club and tickets to the Shedd Aquarium.
Concert tickets will be available at the door.
