Truth inconvenient, but still true
Marc Thomson (Fence Post Feb. 25) wrote a letter titled "There is no logic to Progressive thought." He took issue with Eugene Robinson's column about climate change.
We liberals are fond of the phrase, "You are entitled to your own opinion, but not to your own facts." There is a reason Al Gore's Oscar winning film is titled "An Inconvenient Truth." Sometimes, the truth is inconvenient. It just isn't any less true.
But, just suppose, for argument's sake, that experts all over the world are wrong, and you climate change deniers are right. There are two other very good reasons why Americans should pursue alternative energy solutions, even if there is "no problem." Number one, the economy stupid ... creating green industries creates green jobs, and jobs are priority in an economic recession. Number two, the security of our country depends on reducing, if not ending, our dependence on foreign oil.
You can deny climate change all you want, because you won't be around when the Earth burns up. On the way to that inevitable end, your great grandchildren will probably be cursing you and saying, "What were they thinking?"
But, if our leaders bury their heads in the sand, like you deniers, you may still have the opportunity to stand on a bread line, or help clean up after the next 9/11 attack.
