Hanover Park man gets 10 years on charge linked to Huntley shooting
A Hanover Park man linked to an April 2009 shooting outside a Huntley strip mall was sentenced today to 10 years in prison after admitting he illegally had a handgun at the time.
Mahood Roohani, 20, of the 3700 block of Monitor Drive, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon in connection with the incident last year that police described as a drug ripoff gone bad.
As part of a plea bargain entered in McHenry County court, prosecutors agreed to dismiss more serious charges of armed violence, attempted armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm filed against Roohani after the shooting, as well as lesser charges of reckless discharge of a firearm and mob action.
Roohani attorney Jon Casey declined to comment. Assistant McHenry County State's Attorney Michael Combs called the agreement "fair."
Authorities said Roohani, described as a known gang member, and a second man went to a parking lot in the 9700 block of Route 47 on April 23, 2009, intending to rob a group of five teens and young adults. The group - which included three Huntley High School students - believed they were going to sell the men drugs, police said.
When they arrived at the lot, police said, Roohani and co-defendant Scott M. Treece approached the group as it sat in parked a SUV. Both men wore bandannas to hide their identities and Roohani was carrying a semiautomatic handgun, police said.
When the SUV's driver saw the gun, police said, he threw the vehicle in reverse in an attempt to escape. Roohani, police said, opened fire, shooting one round into SUV's windshield, but not hitting any of the occupants. He and Treece then fled aboard a motorcycle, police said.
At the time of the incident, court documents show, Roohani was on parole after serving part of a four-year prison term for a 2007 residential burglary in Kane County.
Treece, 22, of the 3800 block of Thornberry Way in Lake in the Hills, is facing charges of armed robbery, armed violence, aggravated discharge of a firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm for his alleged role in the incident. He has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday for a pretrial status hearing.
