Fireworks -- not gunshots -- lead to lockdown at 2 Hanover Park schools
Parkwood and Laurel Hill Elementary Schools in Hanover Park were briefly on lockdown Thursday afternoon while police investigated reports of gunshots in the area.
However, police couldn't find any victims, damaged property or other evidence of gunshots. The lockdown was lifted after about an hour.
Hanover Park Deputy Police Chief Tom Cortese said around 2:10 p.m., police went to the area of Astor Avenue and Arbor Vitae Drive to investigate the sounds, which some neighbors described as fireworks.
Students at nearby Laurel Hill had already left for the day when the report surfaced, but remaining students, staff and teachers were advised to remain in the building, Elgin Area School District U-46 spokesman Tony Sanders said.
Police to continue the matter and ask anyone with information to call (630) 372-4400.
