Hersey's Rogowski nets scoring mark
There is a new all-time scoring leader for the Hersey girls basketball program.
And she is only a junior.
Megan Rogowski's game-high 24 points with 2 3-point baskets in a 63-41 triumph over Mundelein in the Mustangs' Class 4A regional girls basketball semifinal gave her 1,531 for her career.
The former Hersey leader was Corinne Vossel (1,523 points).
Senior Maddie Swan also chipped in 10 points, 10 rebounds and 7 of the Huskies' 14 blocked shots.
Brittany Pittas (2 3-pointers) added 8 points for the No. 2 seeded Huskies (23-7), who will face No. 10 Warren for the championship on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
Eileen Zydek (6 points) added 8 rebounds for the Huskies while Julia Fredian (8 points) had 6 assists and a pair of 3-pointers.
Wheeling 45, Palatine 28: With leading scorer Janelle Cannon sidelined with illness, Wheeling regrouped and used a balanced scoring attack in the Waukegan Class 4A regional semifinal.
Bianca Szafarowicz (14 points), Kellie Kuzmanic (9), Larissa Aguero (8), Selma Smajlovic (7) and Stephanie Kuzmanic (6) led the top-seeded Wildcats (26-4), who will face No. 8 Barrington (17-12) for Thursday's title.
Cannon, who did not feel well when she led Wheeling with 16 points in last Wednesday's Mid-Suburban League championship game, did not practice Monday and thought it would be best to rest Tuesday, according to Wildcats coach Shelly Wiegel.
The coach hopes her Minnesota recruit (18 ppg, 6.5 rebounds) will be ready Thursday.
Senior Stephanie Kuzmanic pulled down 15 rebounds while Szafarowicz had 9, Aguero 5 and Kellie Kuzmanic 4.
"Stephanie (Kuzmanic) really hit the boards well," Wiegel said. "Everyone did a good job recognizing Janelle was not there. We had a nice balanced attack."
No. 16 Palatine was led by Katie Mnichowicz (10 points) and Heather Zimmerman (5).
Fremd 57, Lake Forest 53: With the score tied 48-48 and two minutes left, No. 6 Fremd finished the game with 9 free throws to win its own Class 4A regional semifinal over No. 11 Lake Forest.
The Vikings (21-9) will face No. 3 Libertyville for the title on Thursday.
Senior Gianna Abruzzo led the Vikings with 20 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals.
Taylor Glassmann added 14 points and 3 rebounds.
Megan Gray collected 7 rebounds or the winners while Megan Hubbard had 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
"Give credit to Lake Forest," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "They hit big shot after big shot."
The Vikings led 38-28 in the third quarter.
"But they wouldn't go away," Yates said.
Fremd freshman guard Ashley McConnell chipped in 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
Barrington 57, Highland Park 39: With three starters picking up 2 fouls in the first quarter, Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro had to use her bench a lot in the first half against No. 9 Highland Park.
The reserves came through and the No. 8 Fillies (17-12) were able to advance to Thursday's title game against top-seeded Wheeling (26-4).
Barrington junior Abby Kirchoff scored a game-high 16 points and teammate Sarah Mass added 10.
"The kids off the bench (Shelby Whigham, Sam Maasarani, Danielle Tinkoff and Lizzie Deuel) really picked us up," Barreiro said. "And Sarah Mass (5 rebounds, 5 steals, 1 blocked shot) really took over for us at that point of the game. Sarah started penetrating and looking for things."
Nicole Collins and Whigham (5 rebounds, 3 steals) each added 8 points for the winner (17-12).
"Nicole did a nice job offensively with moves to the basket and hit some big shots," Barreiro said. "Shelby gave us nice minutes off the bench and hit some good baskets. Emily Harris was really steady."
The Fillies have not played Wheeling this season.
"We'll try to be as prepared as we can and come out and play our game," Barreiro said. "At this time of the season, if you play four good quarters, it's anyone's game."
Loyola 53, Maine West 48: The No. 7 seeded Ramblers ended the No. 10 Warriors' season at 12-18 in the Glenbrook North Class 4A regional semifinal.
