Busy, productive day for Dowell
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Jake Dowell just finished playing a game in Rockford on Saturday night when he got a call to meet the Blackhawks' charter at O'Hare Airport.
Dowell, recalled because of the injury to Marian Hossa, jumped in his car and made the one hour and 15 minute drive from Rockford, arriving at O'Hare just as the Hawks did following their win over Atlanta in a shootout.
Dowell wound up scoring a goal to go with an assist in Sunday's 5-4 win over Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.
"I had just enough time," Dowell said of his dash to the airport. "As soon as I got off the ice they said get showered and be ready to go. Our game got over in regulation and the Hawks went into a shootout, so I think that bought me a little time to get there."
Dowell's goal in the second period gave the Hawks a 4-2 lead and came shortly after he set up a goal by Bryan Bickell, who was recalled from Rockford on Saturday.
"It's a great feeling," Dowell said. "Obviously you want to do anything you can to help the team and make a name for yourself and set yourself apart to stay and be here for a while. Luckily I got a couple good plays when pucks came to me."
Hawks coach Joel Quenneville liked what he saw from Dowell and Bickell.
"Jake did a heck of a job and Bick played a really good game as well," Quenneville said. "We've been looking for some secondary scoring and tonight that was the group."
Grab some bench: Joel Quenneville sent Kris Versteeg a message Sunday by playing the slumping winger only four minutes and 54 seconds.
Versteeg, who has no goals in 16 games, never saw the ice late.
"I didn't like the way he was playing," Quenneville said.
By the rules: Troy Brouwer was surprised to get a second instigator penalty in the third period for instigating a fight while wearing a visor.
"For me personally, I didn't know that having a visor and having an instigator was an extra two minutes," Brouwer said.
The rules say a player wearing a visor must remove it to start a fight.
"I didn't think about (the rule) either," Joel Quenneville said.
Brouwer got 19 minutes in penalties for instigating a fight with Anton Stralman, who had gone knee to knee with Patrick Kane.
Rest and relax: What does Joel Quenneville want his non-Olympians to do during the break that starts today?
"We want them to get away from the game a little bit, which is going to be healthy for them," Quenneville said. "Enjoy their time whether they're going on trips or whatever, but they have to do some training and do some working out along the way.
"Getting away from the ice will be beneficial, but at the same time you've still got to take care of yourself."
The Hawks will be off for 10 days before resuming practice Feb. 25.
Captain serious? Jonathan Toews couldn't resist giving it to Patrick Kane after scoring again in the shootout Saturday against Atlanta.
Toews, 7-for-12 in shootouts after missing Sunday, was teasing Kane, who had been 3-for-12 before connecting in the win over the Blue Jackets.
"You know what my record is? What's his record? It's about the one thing I've got on him," Toews said.
Toews' accuracy in shootouts has helped the Hawks go 8-5 in them.
"You go down and try to do what works and look at what the goalie gives you," Toews said. "It's a big part of our game, so I try to bear down."
