Operation Stop and Smile

With the red-light camera debate again heating up, the time has come to initiate a program that, if fully embraced, is guaranteed to end the use of this technology.

Operation Stop and Smile does not rely on changes from politicians, law enforcement, courts or the red-light camera companies themselves. The change will happen through the will of the people, the taxpaying citizens of Illinois.

Operation Stop and Smile, a simple four-step system. can be implemented immediately and successfully.

Step 1: When approaching any intersection with a traffic signal, use caution, even when the light is green.

Step 2: When the light is, or becomes yellow, use this as a signal of high caution, with a red light soon to follow. This is best negotiated with your vehicle's braking system and rarely with the accelerator; contact your local law enforcement agency for their recommendations.

Step 3: When approaching a traffic light which is red, use this as a signal to suspend forward progress, bringing your vehicle safely to a complete and absolute stop, behind the lines which have been conveniently provided. If turning right, only then, begin to consider your turn.

Step 4: Smile broadly, though your picture will not be taken you have just saved yourself $100 and contributed to the end of the red-light camera system as we know it.

In summary, no red light violators equals no revenue for red light companies and their municipality customers who have invested millions in the technology with the belief that you and I won't be stopping behind those lines at every intersection. In a short time, if we work together, these systems can and will become obsolete and be removed. And that's something we can all Stop and Smile about, don't you think?
