Simple steps can keep coyotes away

Setting traps will not solve Wheaton's issues with coyotes. Trapping doesn't work to reduce coyote populations because new animals quickly replace those removed. Mayor Michael Gresk has acknowledged this fact.

Residents of Wheaton should focus on long-term solutions, such as ensuring that coyotes are not enticed by human-created food sources like garbage or pet food left outdoors, and that coyotes are never fed deliberately. An active hazing campaign, using noisemakers, rubber bullets and hose spraying, can teach coyotes to avoid areas where they're not wanted.

For homeowners with fenced yards, the Coyote Roller is an effective device for keeping dogs in and coyotes out. It is a cylinder that attaches to the top of a fence and "rolls" off any animal attempting to climb over. Pets should never be left outside unsupervised - to protect them from other animals, cars and even mean-spirited people.

The few direct contacts between coyotes and people are almost always related to humans feeding the animals, whether intentionally or not. Once coyotes associate people with food, they lose their fear.

Proactive, nonlethal coyote mitigation programs have been effective in Arizona and Colorado, including in areas with far more coyotes than Wheaton. Wheaton can and should set a humane example, too.
