International Folk Dancing: Fermilab International Folk Dancing will sponsor a workshop with Daniel Sandu, an internationally known teacher of Romanian dance and his special fusion of this with percussive dance and Balkan Roma (gypsy) styles, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28, at Kuhn Village Barn on the Fermilab site. A full-time resident of the Netherlands, Sandu is currently on staff at the folk dance house, "Terpsichore," in Amsterdam, where his course "Rhythm, Romania, Roma" ("3R") ranks among their most popular offerings.

The public is invited to this workshop and to any sessions of this dance group, which meets weekly year-round on Thursday evenings at Fermilab. Newcomers are welcome, and you don't need to come with a partner or have any special clothing. Kane County Genealogical Society: The Kane County Genealogical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, in the first-floor meeting room of the Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St., Geneva. The topic for the evening will be "Digging in the Dirt: The History and Mysteries of the Will County Poor Farm and Potters' Fields" presented by Gina Wysocki of the University of St. Francis. Through this presentation, researchers will have a greater understanding of the development of early social service systems. In the process of writing her book, Wysocki was able to identify one of several potters' fields in the city of Joliet and, since, it has been recognized as one of the area's earliest cemeteries. In her spare time she operates and directs tour services for those interested in Illinois fossil treasures. All are welcome to attend. Elburn Lions: The Elburn Lions Club hosts bingo every Friday at the clubhouse, 500 Filmore St., Elburn. The doors open at 5 p.m. Early Bird Bingo starts at 6:30 p.m., with regular games beginning at 7 p.m. Twelve regular games are offered as well as three progressive and one split the pot raffles. Food and drink are available for purchase. Proceeds go toward Campaign SightFirst II, a worldwide Lions fundraising campaign to fight preventable and reversible blindness. American Legion Post 75: The Fox River-Geneva American Legion Post 75 will offer a "Friday Fish Fry" every week through April 2. A variety of seafood and chicken entrees with a wide selection of side dishes will be available from 5 to 8 p.m. at a cost of $7.50-$9 at the Legion Hall, 22 S. Second St., Geneva. Batavia Woman's Club: The Batavia Woman's Club will host a luncheon and program on Monday, Feb. 1, at Riverview Banquets located at 1117 Washington St., Route 25, Batavia. The speaker will be Allison Johnsen, LCPC, CPC, from Legacy Clinical Consultants. Johnsen is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, and Certified Professional Coach. Geneva Rotary Club: The Rotary Club of Geneva is a service club whose members include business, professional and community leaders. It meets at 7 a.m. Tuesdays at Mill Race Inn in Geneva. For information, visit genevarotary.org. The Rotary Club has started a new fundraiser called the "Rotary Rock." They will put a rock that weighs about 30 pounds on the ice-covered pond near the Fox River at the Mill Race Inn sometime in mid-February. For $1, guess the day and time that it will fall back through the ice and you win half the pot. The "Rotary rock" is currently at the Citizen Kane restaurant, 330 W. Audubon Society: The Kane County Chapter of Illinois Audubon Society invites the public to these programs and activities.

On Saturday, Feb. 6, the monthly bird walk will be 8 a.m. at Nelson Lake in Dick Young Forest Preserve, on Nelson Lake Road about three-quarter mile south of Main Street in Batavia. While birding is the main objective, there are many other facets of nature to enjoy. Walk as little as you want or the entire loop around the lake. On Wednesday, Feb. 10, the monthly meeting will be at 7 p.m. at St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave. The topic will be "Prairie Green," the Geneva Park District's newest acquisition, which has proved to harbor some very interesting and hard-to-find birds. Yellow-headed blackbirds and many other water and field birds were seen in 2009. The meeting also will include the latest bird sightings, the opportunity to chat with other good folks who are interested in nature, refreshments, and the raffle. On Saturday, Feb. 20, join the "Gull Frolic" at the Winthrop Harbor Yacht Club. The Illinois Ornithological Society, celebrating its ninth year, is sponsoring this event which includes food (including "Sea Gull Stew"), booths and a view of lots and lots of gulls, ducks, and other water fowl in the harbor. On Saturday, Feb. 27, take a bird walk at 8 a.m. at Les Arends Forest Preserve, Batavia. Local naturalist Jon Duerr will lead a walk, and share his extensive knowledge, along the river to view water fowl as well as other birds that winter-over in Illinois. Sierra Club: Jack Darin, executive director of the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club, will be the featured speaker at the local club meeting on Monday, Feb 8. Darin will give a legislative update for the upcoming General Assembly sessions in Springfield. Elburn Seniors: Elburn Seniors invites interested people to join the trip to Jumer's Casino, Rock Island on Tuesday, March 2. Price is $35 which includes bus fare and lunch. Fox Valley Newcomers and Neighbors: The Fox Valley Newcomers and Neighbors Club invites you to join the group on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Gibby's Wine Den, 1772 S. Randall Road, Suite 20, Geneva. A meet and greet will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the luncheon and entertaining and informative program begins at noon. Enjoy a catered lunch and a presentation on how food and wine impact one another. North Aurora Mothers Club: The North Aurora Mothers Club will host its annual fundraiser - The North Aurora Winter Gala - from 6 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Fox Valley Country Club in North Aurora. It will include hors d'oeuvres, dinner buffet, open bar, raffles and silent auction, with entertainment provided by Music by Design and a special performance by Moves Dance Studio.

In addition, there will be a pre-raffle before the gala; tickets are being sold now. The first prize is $1,000; tickets are $10 each and the winner does not need to be present at the gala.

As the club's largest fundraising event, the proceeds from the Winter Gala will go toward supporting the community. Since its inception in 1997, the North Aurora Mothers Club has dispersed more than $150,000 toward programs benefiting local children and their families as well as the police department, fire department, library and community outreach programs.

North Aurora Mothers Club is currently seeking contributions from individuals and business for the Winter Gala. Mothers of Twins and Triplets Club: Looking for a way to save money on your children's clothing this spring? Be sure to check out the Tri-Cities Mothers of Twins and Triplets Club spring resale on Saturday, March 13. The resale features gently used spring clothing for boys and girls, from infant through preteen. Other gently used items for sale include shoes, holiday outfits, dress-up, toys, videos, outdoor equipment, bikes, strollers, baby furniture, maternity clothing, books and other items for babies or children. Beverages and home baked goods will be available for purchase at the sale as well. The sale runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mooseheart Fieldhouse, located on Route 31 and Mooseheart Road between Batavia and North Aurora. Admission to the sale is $1. A portion of the proceeds from the sale is given back to the club to cover club expenses and, in part, to support club events such as a breakfast with Santa and a summer picnic.
