St. Charles East student faces drug charge
A St. Charles East High School student faces a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, accused of supplying a prescription amphetamine to another student.
Daniel K, Breen, 17, of the 0-99 block of White Oak Circle in St. Charles, was arrested at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the school, 1020 Dunham Road, according to a police report. He appeared in Kane County court bond call Tuesday, and was released on a personal-recognizance bond.
A student in a third-period study hall told the supervising teacher that they had seen a male student in that study hall crush a pill and snort the contents off a desk. That student then told school officials he had obtained the pill from Breen, in exchange for bringing him a toaster pastry the next day, and that he ingested the drug to improve his performance in school.
Police found two prescription bottles in Breen's bookbag, according to a police report. One, labeled as being prescribed to him, was for D-amphetamine, a generic version of the dug Adderall. Adderall is used to treat hyperactivity and attention-deficit disorders. The other bottle, also empty, didn't have a label, but Breen told police it had contained Vyvan, another stimulant used to treat those disorders.
The police report said that Breen told them students know he takes the prescription and “routinely” ask him for it, that he had given pills to the other student about 10 times, and that he had given it to him out of “kindness,” not for the toaster pastry.
The charge is a Class 2 felony, punishable by probation or up to seven years in prison.
