Lake Barrington teen charged with setting off smoke bomb at high school hockey game

Lake County sheriff’s deputies have charged a 17-year-old from Lake Barrington with disorderly conduct after he set off a smoke bomb last week during a high school hockey game.

The incident occurred about 8:30 p.m. Dec. 7 during a contest between the Barrington Bronco and Crystal Lake South hockey clubs at the Barrington Ice Arena, 28205 W. Commercial Ave, in Lake Barrington.

The smoke bomb caused the evacuation of building, cancellation of the game and led to two players from the Crystal Lake team being taken to nearby Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital for smoke inhalation. The players, who both suffer from asthma, were treated and released.

Lake County investigators worked with Barrington Unit District 220 officials to identify the 17-year-old male from Barrington High School as the offender.

The boy was brought to the sheriff’s office’s Criminal Investigations Division Tuesday night and later released to the custody of a parent. He will be assigned a juvenile court date in the near future.

“This incident could quite possibly have been much worse,” Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said in a statement. “I am pleased with the cooperation we shared with the village of Lake Barrington and Barrington school officials in this matter and that the person responsible for this reckless act is being held accountable for his behavior.”
