Scouting DeKalb at Kaneland

DeKalb (3-2, 0-1) at Kaneland (5-0, 1-0)

Game time: 7:30 p.m. today

Last year: Kaneland 35, DeKalb 6.

Last week: DeKalb 41, LaSalle-Peru 20; Kaneland 35, Rochelle 8.

Outlook: DeKalb started last year's game with an onside kick, recovered it, and on the next play connected on a 46-yard touchdown pass. Although the speedy Dylan Donnelly graduated from the Barbs, Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said, "I think we'll see a lot of different things from them." Both these former Western Sun teams are now in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East, where DeKalb lost 20-13 to unbeaten Sycamore on Sept. 10. Kaneland which this week cracked The Associated Press and the ISSN Coaches Poll for the first time this season, No. 10 in both also wants to show DeKalb some different looks. Fedderly is looking to enhance team depth with Jacob Razo, Kory Harner and Andrew Essex. This concept gained momentum after Quinn Buschbacher, Kyle Davidson and Taylor Andrews all went out injured within a few minutes' time against Rochelle. Andrews both caused and recovered a fumble, and though Rochelle ran for 280 yards, it couldn't make up for 3 lost fumbles and an interception. Against DeKalb, Fedderly is looking for good games by defensive linemen Blake Serpa, Jimmy Boyle and Ben Kovalick, linebackers Andrews, Tyler Callaghan, Nick Michels and Omarr Maldonado. "I think our front seven is going to be a big key to stopping their offense," Fedderly said.

Next week: DeKalb at Morris (4-1, 1-0), Oct. 8; Kaneland at Yorkville (2-3, 0-1), Oct. 8.
