Meet “Inheritance” author Paolini this week
This week will mark a last hurrah for more than 1,000 young readers throughout the suburbs, as best-selling author Christopher Paolini comes to Bloomingdale and Downers Grove to sign copies of the fourth and final book in his “Inheritance” series.
Paolini is coming to the Tivoli Theater in Downers Grove on Thursday, as part of an event with Anderson’s Bookshop, and Meijer in Bloomingdale on Friday, to sign copies of his latest fiction novel, “Inheritance.”
Paolini was just 15 when he wrote the first draft of “Eragon,” the first book in the series. His family self-published the book in 2001 and it was published by Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers in 2003. Three years later, “Eragon” was made into a Hollywood film.
The next book, “Eldest,” was published in 2005, followed by ‘Brisingr” in 2008. Together, the first three books have sold 25 million copies worldwide.
Although the fantasy novels are set in the fictional world of Alagaesia, filled with elves, dragons and other fantasy creatures, Anderson’s spokeswoman Gail Wetta said the books are popular with readers of all ages because they touch on timeless themes.
“It’s good storytelling and you can’t keep good storytelling down,” Wetta said. “Nothing beats a quest story, because you want to see them beat the bad guys and complete the mission.”
Wetta also agrees with Julie Keating, adult services head at the Bloomingdale Public Library, that novels like Paolini’s introduce kids to heavier literature.
“There’s something to be said for finishing a big book,” said Keating. “A sense of pride.”
The library is now holding a raffle for signed copies of the book, which is open to students in fourth through 12th grade. Forms are available at the library, 101 Fairfield Way, and the contest is open to anyone, Keating said.
Tickets for the Downers Grove book signing are now available at Anderson’s stores in Downers Grove and Naperville. Tickets are $36 and include a copy of the book, a screening of the movie “Eragon,” and a wristband to have your copy signed by Paolini.
The Bloomingdale book signing will be Friday at Meijer. Wristbands will be distributed to the first 500 people in line about two hours before the event. Your book must be purchased at Meijer for about $30 and you must show a receipt to receive a wristband. One autograph is allowed per person and posed photos are prohibited.
