Students from suburbs help create MentorMob.com

MentorMob.com launched this week, aiming to teach you a few things for free.

The website offers playlists for hobbies or interests, ranging from grilling and knitting to playing guitar or golfing. It gathers together everything you may need on a topic into one spot, saving you time from doing extensive online searches. It also encourages users to be part of the community, to add their own knowledge and to participate in discussions.

“Our hope is to provide everyone we can with an intellectual connection,” said the site's community manager Erin Sheffer, who moved from Mundelein to Chicago. “You can meet people with different kinds of passions that they couldn't meet otherwise.”

The site was created and managed by a group of college students or graduates from around the area.

Kris Chinosorn hails from Skokie and Vince Leung from Barrington. They founded the site about two years as another project, and it morphed into MentorMob.com, which made its debut on Oct. 31. The men then enlisted some of their friends.

Other staffers include James Geary from Barrington, Jes Kocemba of Lisle, Jeff Eiden from Deerfield and Adam Croft from Buffalo Grove. They also attend University of Illinois at Champaign, Northwestern University in Evanston and Columbia College in Chicago, among other schools.

The group received some seed money from investors, which Sheffer declined to name, and they're now touring Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, Kansas City and elsewhere to market the new site.

Since the site launched Oct. 31, it has gained more than 600 new users, she said.

The group may be targeting individual users, but they're also talking with corporate trainers, who also may consider the site for in-house training.

“It's easy learning for anyone with an Internet connection,” she said.
