St. Charles East students arrested in drug bust

Police detained a St. Charles East High School student upon arrival at school Wednesday morning after he was observed as a party in a possible drug transaction.

Police officials announced Thursday that the 16-year-old student was taken into custody while an investigation of his belongings occurred. The search resulted in the discovery of three small bags of cannabis that were seized as evidence, police said.

The identity of the student is being withheld because he is a minor.

Drug deals made on school property carry a more serious penalty than illegal transactions made elsewhere. The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized a Class 4 felony charge of delivery of cannabis on school grounds.

The teenager was then transported to the St. Charles Police Department for booking before being taken to the Kane County Juvenile Detention Facility. The student was scheduled for a detention hearing Thursday afternoon.

Police arrested a second male juvenile, whose identity was also withheld. He was charged as a juvenile with misdemeanor possession of cannabis. The boy was later released into the custody of his parents, police said.
