Mount Prospect principal placed on paid leave

The principal of Westbrook Elementary School in Mount Prospect was placed on an indefinite paid leave on Tuesday.

Joseph Leane, president of the Mount Prospect Elementary District 57 school board, confirmed Thursday that Principal Jan Ewing is on leave, but said he couldn't say why, or when she'll return.

"Our employees deserve confidentially, for both ethic and legal reasons," Leane said. "I know this comes as a surprise to Westbrook families and I know this is a disruption but we are trying to come to a resolution as soon as possible."

In the meantime, Susan Woodrow, District 57's assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, will fill in for Ewing, Leane said.

A memo from District 57 Superintendent Elaine Aumiller went home to parents this week.

"I need to inform you of a change that Westbrook School will be experiencing beginning Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010," the memo states. "Westbrook Principal Mrs. Jan Ewing will be on administrative leave with pay for the next few weeks ... The length of Mrs. Ewing's leave has not yet been determined but we will keep you informed."

Aumiller didn't return phone calls on Thursday.
