Vernon Hills teens get probation in park brawl
Two Vernon Hills teens were placed on probation Monday after pleading guilty to attacking an acquaintance in a village park.
Kyley Majmudar, 17, and Zayda Stooksbury, 18, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery after a prosecutor agreed to reduce the felony aggravated battery charges against them.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Scott Hoffert said Majmudar and Stooksbury, both of the 400 block of Farmingdale Court, attacked an 18-year-old Round Lake woman around 5:30 p.m. on May 17.
Hoffert said the attack, which took place at the Westwood subdivision basketball court, was the result of an ongoing dispute between the victim and Stooksbury.
The victim was knocked to the ground and both Majmudar and Stooksbury repeatedly punched and kicked her.
Cody Minton, 19, also of the Farmingdale Court address, was also arrested and charged with aggravated battery when he waved a knife at witnesses who tried to intervene in the fight.
Hoffert said the victim suffered a mild concussion, a broken rib and multiple bruises and abrasions in the attack, and was treated at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
The three defendants were arrested a few blocks from the park, Hoffert said.
Associate Judge Theodore Potkonjak placed Majmudar and Stooksbury on probation for two years, fined them $300 and ordered them to perform 250 hours of public service.
Minton pleaded guilty to aggravated battery on Aug. 1 and was placed on probation for one year.
Hoffert said all three could have faced up to five years in prison if convicted of the original charges after a trial.
