Carmel in fifth at boys golf state tournament
Carmel’s boys golf team is in fifth place in the Class 3A standings after Day 1 of the state tournament at the Den at Fox Creek Golf Club in Bloomington.
The Corsairs are 13 strokes behind leader Lake Forest, which is 15 over par after players battled windy conditions all day Friday.
The Scouts have a 7-stroke lead over second-place Lyons and a 10-stroke lead over Naperville North. Loyola is fourth, 2 strokes ahead of Carmel.
Carmel’s best round came from senior Brian Miller, who is tied for fourth with eight others at 3 over in the individual standings. The Corsairs also counted results from sophomore Jackson Wietecha (80), junior Tommy Schofield (80) and senior Mike Wilkinson (81).
Lake Forest’s Joe Willis had the best round of the day and was the only player under par at 1 under.
Stevenson’s Reed Aren shot 5 over and is in a tie for 15th place individually.
Mundelein’s Grant Heelan is 11 shots behind Willis.
Ÿ In the Class 2A tournament at Weibring Golf Course at Illiniois State University, Vernon Hills is in 12th place in the team standings. The Cougars counted scores from senior Jake Zoll and junior Chris Edwards (84s), junior Connor Dickman (86) and junior Eric Swanson (92).
Lakes’ Matt Hirsch is 9 shots off the lead in the individual tournament. His teammmate, John O’Connor, is 15 shots off thel ead.
