Pumpkins make yearly return to Cosley Zoo

Pumpkins decorated the lawn of Wheaton’s Cosley Zoo Sunday, as it kicked off its annual Pumpkin Festival.

Every weekend in October, the zoo hosts the fest, which features apples, cider, cornstalks and yes, pumpkins for sale. Children also can play on the straw pyramid or pick out the perfect pumpkin to bring home. All the zoo’s usual attractions are available, too.

A slew of children rummaged through the pumpkin selections Sunday. Zoo officials expect a delivery of even larger pumpkins midweek.

“It’s such a beautiful day, and this seemed like the perfect thing to do outside,” said Cheryl Tomlinson of Naperville, who was at the zoo with her 5-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son. “And we’ll probably take a pumpkin or two home.”

John Bichette of Wheaton said his children are already in full fall/Halloween mode.

“They love the colors of the trees, carving pumpkins, deciding on costumes, the whole bit. I’m sure this is the first of several visits we’ll make here this month.”

The zoo, part of the Wheaton Park District, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. For more on the zoo and October’s Pumpkin Festival, go to cosleyzoo.org.
