Flying pumpkins featured in Mundelein’s recycling effort
Look, up in the air, is that a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a flying pumpkin!
Days are getting shorter, temperatures cooler, leaves fallin’ and soon, pumpkins will be flyin’ over Mundelein.
Before you trash that pumpkin, Mundelein Park District, www.mundeleinparks.org, has a “green” use for jack-o-lanterns that are past their prime.
Go “monster green” after Halloween at the 4th Annual Pumpkin Drop from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at Keith Mione Community Park, 1401 N. Midlothian Road.
Bring your pumpkin (one per person) and watch them soar, roll and compost to help the environment.
“Big Red” the trebuchet/catapult, spanning nearly 10 feet across and designed and built by Mundelein High School students, will hurl pumpkins across the field in this unique, eco-friendly and award-winning event.
Age-group pumpkin rolling also takes place, as well as a “fill-the-cans-with-pumpkins” race.
Participants help with cleanup and learn about recycling. The pumpkins’ “remains” are composted at Prairie Crossing Organic Farm in Grayslake, keeping the sustainable cycle going, an important component of the event.
Pumpkins that travel the farthest receive a prize. Call (847) 566-0650 or visit the district’s website or Facebook page.
Pumpkins can only be accepted from participants and any materials should be removed from the inside.
