Quinn gives out grants for suburban health centers

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. Pat Quinn Wednesday announced a series of grants to community health centers, including sites in Carpentersville and Streamwood.

Quinn’s office says $2.87 million will be doled out to the Greater Elgin Family Care Center to build a Streamwood Health Center and make other upgrades. In addition, Aunt Martha’s Service Center will get about $641,000 to renovate its Carpentersville location.

Statewide, the grants announced Wednesday add up to more than $30 million.

“We are investing in the health and wellness of the people of Illinois, and these community health centers reflect the emphasis I have placed on helping people get the care they need as close to where they live and work as possible,” Quinn said in a statement.

The money comes from a 2009 statewide construction deal that is paid for via increased vehicle fees, increased taxes on booze, candy, soda, and some hygiene products, and, eventually, video gambling machines in bars.
