Mount Prospect girl hospitalized after being hit by van

A 13-year-old Mount Prospect girl sustained multiple injuries after she was hit by a delivery van on Northwest Highway Friday afternoon, authorities said.

A preliminary investigation found that the pedestrian was running south across Northwest Highway, just west of Emerson Street, when she was struck by a Ford van headed eastbound. Mount Prospect police say the girl was crossing the street against traffic control signals, and the van attempted to swerve to avoid her, but was unable to.

The girl was transported to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, and her injuries are not believed to be life threatening, officials said.

The 17-year-old driver of the van was traveling at or below the posted speed limit, and will not be cited, police said.

The intersection of Northwest Highway and Emerson Street was partially closed to traffic for about 90 minutes during accident investigation.
