Schaumburg cops share details on tainted Halloween candy

Schaumburg police released further details today concerning two reported cases of trick-or-treat candy tampering on Halloween.

Sgt. John Nebl said a family who came into the station Sunday reported that a small pin or needle had been found in a Snickers bar a child received in the area bordered by Weathersfield Way to the north, Wise Road to the south, Springinsguth Road to the west and Braintree Drive to the east.

The child had observed a small tear in the candy bar's packaging and spotted the object sticking out while unwrapping it, police said.

Nebl cautioned that families not confine their search for dangerous objects to just that brand of candy.

A second party phoned the police department Sunday to report having received a tampered piece of candy in the same area of town. The caller, however, hung up before identifying the type of candy, Nebl said.

Police are asking that the caller, or anyone else who may have discovered a tainted piece of candy, contact the department as soon as possible at (847) 882-3534.
