D15 Special Olympics team wins gold on basketball court

District 15's Special Olympics basketball team, the Blue Jays, won the gold medal at the 2010 Special Olympics Illinois State Basketball Tournament, held Monday, March 12, at Illinois State University.

The team dominated its division, and was led on offense by eighth grader Danny Stewart. Also on the team were eighth graders Alec Hanson and Joey Traina; seventh graders Alison Barr and Drew Mau; fifth grader Jack Dawson; fourth graders Malik Bradley-Henderson and Nathan Hollenbeck; and third graders Ashley Costigan and Josh Kurrie.*

The tournament also featured individual skills competitions, but students who competed in them could not compete in team play. Two District 15 students won gold medals in the individual skills competitions: fifth grader Darron Masangkay and third grader Nicholas Austin.
