Boys water polo/Mid-Suburban League championship

Wheeling (15-6) at Palatine (22-5)

When: 6 p.m. today

Outlook: Palatine edged Wheeling in overtime early this season in their only meeting this spring. The Pirates were missing several players for that matchup but demonstrated their superiority with a 9-1 record against MSL West foes. Wheeling, under first-year coach J.R. Means, ran the table with a 10-0 mark against East opponents. Andy Eiter, Clark Jensen and goalie Shane McDade each earned all-conference honors; along with Ethan Rosengarden they form the backbone of the team. Palatine’s all-conference choices were Kamil Mulawa, Justin Behrens, Dylan Weissmann and standout goalkeeper Dan Sommerfeld. John Giuliano is another potent offensive option for the Pirates, who lost 19-10 to Lyons on Tuesday, but that was after early kick-outs of Mulawa and Weissmann. Bottom line: The Pirates are the league’s defending champion and figure to be tough to beat in their own pool.
