Wheeling H.S. opens ‘Millie’ on April 28
Thoroughly Modern Millie, a high-spirited, tap-dancing romp, will light up the stage in Wheeling High School’s Robert Sang Theater at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, April 28-30.
The musical tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount (Libby Fisher), who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love — a thoroughly modern aim in 1922. Millie soon begins to take delight in the flapper lifestyle, but problems arise when she checks into a hotel owned by the leader of a slavery ring, Mrs. Meers (Julia O’Brien). Although Millie aims to marry her boss, Trevor Graydon III (Lester Caramba), she instead finds herself falling for Jimmy Smith (Sean Kolodziej).
Along the way, she befriends numerous women at the boarding hotel including Dorothy (Kelsey Schauer). Meanwhile, Mrs. Meers and her sidekicks, Bun Foo (Nick Caputo) and Ching Ho (Johnathan Kirby), attempt to sell Dorothy, and Jimmy, Millie and Muzzy von Hossmere (Julia McCarren) must come to her aid. Other cast members are Katy Heath, Leah Valenti, Mallorie Bromer and Celine Dirkes.
The artistic director is Jennifer Zorn-Sargent; Kirstin Snelten is the vocal director; Derek Ellertson, technical director; Diane Rawlinson, choreographer; Sarah Yun, orchestra director; and Laura Berger coordinates costumes and makeup and is house manager.
