Being local in Wheaton’s a blessing
“All politics is local,” U.S. House Speaker “Tip” O’Neill often observed. During the recent election campaign in Wheaton, we experienced the best of local.
Almost all of the candidates for mayor, city council, board of education and park district explained their positions and qualifications clearly. We appreciated one council candidate coming to our house to introduce herself.
The forums organized by the League of Women and other groups helped us get to know the office seekers better. The coverage of these panels by the city of Wheaton cable channels enabled many more residents to benefit from those presentations.
The interviews and profiles of the candidates published in the Daily Herald helped Wheaton residents make informed decisions before entering the voting booth.
During our 34 years in Wheaton, we have sensed an increasing willingness by our elected officials to interact with them at their meetings and even when we see them at a public event, on the street or in a store. That’s a blessing of being local.
