Lawmakers’ math may doom us all

In the March 16 paper, I read where the Senate won’t support a $61 billion dollar reduction in spending proposed by the House, saying the cuts are too drastic. This year’s budget is $3.7 trillion. What do these numbers look like in print? Here they are: $3,700,000,000,000 and $61,000,000,000.

Grade school math taught us to take away the zeros to make the equation easier. That would make it $3,700 and $61. If your household brings in $3,700 per month, how hard is it to find $61 in expenses to cut out?

Begrudgingly the Senate agreed to $6 billion in cuts. They think that taking $6 out of a $3,700 spending plan is painful enough. With this thinking we are all doomed, Democrats and Republicans alike.
