Former Prospect lineman signs with Purdue
A little more than a year ago, Purdue was interested in trying to get Matt Huene to join its football team as a walk-on.
Now the former Prospect offensive lineman has walked into a much better situation with the Boilermakers. He signed to accept a scholarship earlier this week after spending the past year at the Air Force Academy Prep School.
“We’re excited to have Matt join us,” Purdue coach Danny Hope said in a statement of the 6-foot-6, 260-pound Huene. “We didn’t have a true offensive tackle talent sign with us back in February and he really fits the prototype at that position.
“He is also an excellent student. I’ve stated that I like to hold back a scholarship or two in the event an unsigned prospect comes along, and that is certainly the case with Matt.”
The 6-foot-6, 260-pound Huene started at Prospect as a senior after missing his junior year with a ripped tendon in his right knee.
Huene’s scholarship offers as a Prospect senior included Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky and South Dakota State.
