Libertyville D70 swears in new board members

Maryann Ovassapian has been elected by fellow board members to serve as president of the Libertyville Elementary District 70 School Board for two years.

During a recent board meeting, board members also elected Tom Vickers to serve as board vice president for two years. Anne Brandt was elected to serve as secretary for two years and Chris Kennedy was named secretary pro tem.

During the same meeting, departing board President Judy Zoellick, who did not seek re-election after seven years of service, swore in three board members. Serving four-year terms until 2015 are political newcomer Jennifer Lund, and incumbents Kennedy and Ovassapian. They ran in an uncontested race with Lund as the top vote getter with 873 votes, followed by Kennedy with 869 votes and Ovassapian with 855 votes. Lund works at Highland Middle School handling student services, Kennedy is an attorney and Ovassapian is a registered nurse.

Committee appointments made during the same meeting included naming Vickers as Finance Committee chairman for two years, board members Ovassapian and Lund to head the Labor Management Committee, and Vickers will continue to be a liaison to the Village of Libertyville.

During the meeting, Kennedy was named to be the district representative on the Special Education District of Lake County Governing Board. Board member Joy Schwerman was named to represent the district at the Education Research and Development group, and Laura Beltchenko will continue to be the Illinois Association School Board representative. Ovassapian and board member Brandt will be the liaisons for Partners for Excellence in Education and Schwerman will work with the Sick Bank to determine sick leave.

Brandt will continue as the board representative for the Family Associations of District 70 (FAD) when the presidents of the district's family associations meet.
