Time for change in Dist. 125
No matter how you see it, 18 years uncontested is not a good thing. That’s how long our school board at SHS has been in place. It’s not a slam on the current board but it is surprising that they themselves haven’t suggested a rotation or even term limits. Status quo for 18 years is not good.
The Daily Herald recently wrote that, regarding local races - “Race after race....has just one candidate per seat resulting in an automatic victory or special appointment to the slot.” Well, after 18 years it is great that Stevenson High School, District 125, finally has a choice.
Again, it is not taking away from the current board, but having Powell, Brady and Cardella means providing some new, refreshing perspectives. Why shouldn’t SHS expenditures be examined more closely? Why have total expenses increased even as enrollments have declined in the past three years? Shouldn’t we consider merit pay increases - like the rest of us live with? Just maybe it would even enhance SHS performance. These are some of the ideas new members can bring to the board for consideration.
With three new members joining the other well-established members long in place that will provide good balance for informed decisions. Yes, we should say thank you to those that served, but after 18 years of uncontested management, it is time for new and fresh input.
Perhaps it can even help return SHS to its prior loftier ranking. Take a closer look, Powell, Brady and Cardella will add some energy with fresh leadership and input.
