Candles, incense started Woodridge apartment fire

A fire at a Woodridge apartment was sparked by candles and incense that were part of a religious shrine, authorities said Friday.

The fire inside a first-floor unit of the three-story apartment building broke out around 7:40 a.m. Thursday on the 6600 block of Double Eagle Drive. Two children under the age of 10 were rescued from a bedroom and taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville, where they were treated for smoke inhalation and released, officials said.

Investigators with the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District determined the fire started in a hallway closet, where the shrine was located.

“The cause of the fire is attributed to unattended open flame in the proximity of combustible material and is therefore classified as an accidental fire,” Bureau Chief Jim French said in a news release.

The fire was brought under control within five minutes of firefighters arriving.

One firefighter was also treated at the scene for a minor cut, French said.
