Naperville snow refund on its way
Crews will likely be cleaning up new snow piles by the time the money gets here but Naperville officials learned they will be reimbursed for their cleanup efforts following February’s blizzard.
The city recently learned the $520,246.51 claim officials filed with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in May was approved and that 75 percent of the submitted expenses would be reimbursed in six to eight weeks.
Costs that qualify for public assistance include overtime costs, snow removal expenses and damage to government property.
City Manager Doug Krieger said he was thrilled the funds were approved but added the money has already been accounted for in the city’s budget
“Nevertheless,” he said, “It’s the first time any of us around here can remember receiving funding for a snow event.”
In all, 131 different agencies from DuPage County submitted a total of just more than $3 million in claims earlier this year.
DuPage County Emergency Management Coordinator David Gervino said the county received a check for $271,338 just last week.
“We received our check for 75 percent of our expenses and we’ve begun hearing reports of other entities receiving theirs too,” he said.
