March is Social Worker Month
March is Social Work Month, a time to honor the 640,000 professional social workers in the United States who have dedicated their careers to either helping people transform their lives, or improving environments that make such progress possible.
“Social Workers improve the fabric of society by being advocates for people who need help addressing serious life challenges and exploring their options. They are a key part of the decision team when it comes to ensuring that aging parents have quality care in the home. It improves the quality of life while reducing emergency room visits and soaring healthcare costs,” said Richard Ueberfluss, president of Assisting Hands-Naperville, which works with social workers and families to establish safe at-home settings.
Increasingly, families meet with social workers in the hospital before discharging patients that may need post-hospital care. They can make knowledgeable recommendations about rehabilitation, skilled nursing facilities or home care. These are critical components of an effective healthcare program.
Ueberfluss adds that “those of us in this industry are especially appreciative that social workers believe they have a responsibility to affect positive change for the future. With an aging population, social workers will be in the forefront of care enhancement.”
