Misinformation abounds in SHS race

As a 10-year resident of Vernon Hills in the Stevenson High School district, a taxpayer, and a physics educator at both the high school and college level, I am proud to declare my support for incumbents Moons, Lubin, Roberts, and Weisberg in the District 125 school board race.

For me, the most important reason is simple: if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

Under the tenure of these incumbents, District 125 has consistently achieved top marks in the way in which the school educates its students.

Students from Stevenson High School are among the best, academically and civically, that schools in our area turn out (I should know, as the school where I teach is a major “competitor” with Stevenson in this sense).

In addition, while many other schools in the North Shore area are struggling financially under the pressures of the recession, the foresight of the incumbents has placed District 125 on a far better, more responsible fiscal footing.

Sadly, the opposition fighting to unseat these worthy incumbents has resorted to all manner of misinformation in their campaign.

I was shocked to discover that this opposition was, from their own website, amenable to teaching “the weaknesses of evolutionary theory” (code for the promotion of creationism).

It also concerned me greatly to find that they seem to be taking much of their campaign stance straight from groups such as the right-wing fundamentalist Illinois Family Institute.

I don’t want my public school board run by people with an ideological agenda.

I want to see those in charge approaching the challenges facing District 125 from a careful, rational, and pragmatic direction.

That’s why I plan to vote on April 5th to re-elect incumbents Moons, Lubin, Roberts, and Weisberg. You should, too.
