Wood carvers bring their art to Pheasant Run
If you love wood-carved art or consider yourself a decent woodworker, it’s likely the Winter Wood Wonders show this weekend in the St. Charles Ballroom at Pheasant Run will have something for you.
“This is a whole new concept because it will have all wood arts combined in one show,” said show organizer Sandy Jennings, herself a wood carver from Glen Ellyn.
The show, which also features the work of several area wood carving clubs, will raise funds for the Hines VA Windy City Athletes, and the Wounded Warriors program.
“We wanted to do something to support the veterans, and we thought this would be a great way to do it,” said Jennings, who along with her husband Orlan, and friends Shelly Weiser and Sharon Bechtold, planned the event in only three months.
“We are wood carvers and we started talking and just had this idea for a very inclusive show, and said let’s do it,” Jennings said.
Weiser, who lives in Naperville, started carving a few years ago at age 75, will have his award-winning art on display.
JR Cadawas of Chicago, considered a famous wood carver, will also be at the show, which is open to art collectors and anyone else interested in seeing how this art is created or would like to purchase pieces.
Suggested donation is $3 for the show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Skating and eatsIt#146;s been a bit of a merry-go-round for the restaurant/bar site that is part of the Fox Valley Ice Arena. It#146;s been an Italian beef joint, an Elliot#146;s Delicatessen, and now it#146;s time for the hockey connection.
Jim Chelios, whose nephew is former Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Wolves star Chris Chelios, will open Chelios#146; Pub and Grill at the ice rink on Kirk Road.
There is no ownership connection with Chris Chelios, but it doesn#146;t hurt to have that same last name #8212; especially in a place that will rely on ice skating and hockey patrons to eat or have a drink.
The Chelios family already owns and operates a restaurant in Aurora, and Jim#146;s sons, Chris and Pete, will manage both sites.
This will be another sports bar choice in the region, and you don#146;t necessarily have to be a hockey player or ice skater to stop in and enjoy lunch or dinner with plenty of TVs providing sports entertainment.
Good golf newsIt was great to hear at the open house last week for retiring Pottawatomie Golf Course pro Jim Wheeler that his replacement will be Ron Skubisz, who was most recently the general manager at St. Andrew#146;s Golf Course in West Chicago.
Skubisz brings a great reputation with him to Pottawatomie, and everyone at Wheeler#146;s party at the Pottawatomie Community Center had good things to say about Skubisz. Plus, assistant Bill Ogiego remains on staff, so that was welcome news as well.
Unhappy golf newsI was sad to hear that my friend and golf instructor extraordinaire Rich Flores of Batavia has become ill and is undergoing chemotherapy.
Keep Rich in your prayers.
