Large fire at Island Lake excavating business

Firefighters remained on the scene of a structure fire inside a commercial Island Lake building Monday night more than three hours after the fire had started, according to fire officials.

The Wauconda Fire District responded to the extra-alarm fire at 28766 W. Burnett Road about 7:30 p.m., officials said.

The structure, home to Alan Smith Excavating and Rental, was described by firefighters as a large commercial building.

Fire crews remained at the scene extinguishing “hot spots” as of 10:45 p.m. Monday.

The company was founded in 1954 and provides excavation equipment and services for the Chicago area, according to its website.
